Focus and Concentration Game: 2-3 minutes of silent focusing and counting of rocks thrown in a vessel. Almost all kids got the right count.
Story Time Focus: 'I' for Intelligence
After a quick recap of all the Alphabets done so far in our Alphabet Safari (A-H), we moved to the letter 'I'. Both Jayasree aunty and myself were impressed with the kids' memory, when they shouted out what all the Alphabets stood for.
We discussed what 'I' stood for and got a series of answers such as: India, Idea, Ice cream, I etc. By far the most popular answer though was iphone, ipod and ipad!! :-)We talked about what 'intelligence' means and how we utilize our mind and brain to do intelligent work. The distinction between 'intellect' and 'mind' were discussed with some examples. The kids now know, that when they are contemplating on whether to chew up their 15th candy or no, their intellect comes into play, and clearly cautions them 'NO, you have eaten too much, one more candy will make you sick!'.
They heard an Akbar/Birbal story about how Birbal used his intelligence to settle a fight between 2 ladies claiming a child to be their own.
They heard another Tenali Raman story where the king asks the court to come up with the punishment for someone who kicked the King in the chest the previous night. While all other ministers answer that the culprit should be thrown in jail, exiled etc, Tenali Raman alone says the King should reward the culprit with golden anklets. Everyone is shocked except for the King who rewards Tenali Raman for the culprit is none other than the King's own child!
We also discussed how Hanuman outwitted the sea monster Surasa while crossing the ocean to find Sita.
Activity: The kids were given several puzzles where they can use their intelligence such as word search, match the following, scrambled letters. All kids now have their 'Alphabet safari' books that they are updating after each alphabet.
Geeta Chanting Chapter - 11
